The Spacefile System: 4 Mechanical Assist Mobiles (SDS)

“Spacefile met our detailed accessibility requirements. The track is great. The reduced slope ensures easy access for people who use wheelchairs.”
Murray McCrae,
Manager, Corporate Property Management, Community Services Group

The Challenge:

With roughly 300 employees moving into the new state-of-the-art facility in early 2009 (and many more to follow), the City of Guelph was faced with the challenge of accommodating everyone under one roof. In addition, the design and construction of the new facilities had to meet the requirements of the City of Guelph Facility Accessibility Design Manual, which addresses the specific needs of persons with disabilities.

The Solution:
The City of Guelph issued an RFP including the Accessibility Design Manual. Spacefile and Brenneman Filing Systems Limited, an independent service company specializing in filing and storage, worked on the proposal together and ended up winning the tender based on a number of factors, including accessibility and price.
In order to meet the accessibility requirements for “Space and Reach”, “Accessible Routes, Paths & Corridors” and “Controls and Operating Mechanisms”, Spacefile and Brenneman collaborated on an innovative low profile track design and developed a solution that includes four Mechanical Assist Mobile (SDS) systems that incorporate Spacefile ThinLine tiers and existing shelving from other manufacturers.

The Result:
The City of Guelph has successfully amalgamated a number of departments under one roof. The City has even been able to store all of its Building Services, Engineering Services and Planning department files in one Spacefile Mechanical Assist Mobile (SDS) system.
The 1:12 slope tracks and large aisles enable wheelchair accessibility. The handwheels on the Mechanical Assist Mobiles only require 2 pounds of pressure to turn and open the large storage systems. Spacefile’s ThinLine tiers ensure more linear filing inches in less height, maximizing storage capacity and allowing people who use wheelchairs the ability to reach more documents.
